BERLIOZ 150 - EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE
Berlioz 150 (formally the Berlioz Sesquicentenary Committee) was set up as a registered charity (number 1173910) to mark the 150th anniversary in 2019 of the death Hector Berlioz, with the vision of “inspiring young people with a lifelong love of music and singing”. The charity has now been closed, and its work and assets transferred to the Berlioz Society.
Berlioz 150 produced two sets of teaching resources, for primary and secondary schools respectively, for teachers and schoolchildren to learn about Berlioz and his best known work, the Symphonie Fantastique. These remain available online at www.fantastique.school, and are completely free to use. They comprise two primary lesson plans (Berlioz the Orchestrator and Berlioz the Storyteller) and three secondary lesson plans (Berlioz the Composer, Berlioz the Orchestrator and Berlioz the Conductor). They are designed to be easy to use, even for non-specialist music teachers, and highly engaging and participatory.
In addition to the lesson plans, the site includes a range of other teaching resources, including a video of a complete performance of the Symphonie Fantastique given by the Aurora Orchestra, playing from memory, during the 2019 BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
For further information about how to use the resources and support available in doing so, or to provide feedback on them, please email contact@berlioz150.org. We would very much welcome your input!
